Bulgarian and Norwegian

Bulgarian and Norwegian is a language combination that connects two distinct European linguistic traditions, one from the Slavic east and one from the Germanic north, whose cultural histories are both rich and quite different in character. Bulgarian is the official language of Bulgaria and one of the South Slavic languages, written in the Cyrillic alphabet and with a literary tradition that includes the invention of that alphabet itself, in the work of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the ninth century, as well as a significant body of medieval religious literature, a national literary revival in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and a vibrant contemporary literary culture. Norwegian is a North Germanic language spoken in Norway, a country that has produced a literary output of remarkable international influence, from the medieval sagas and the poetry of the Edda through the dramatic realism of Ibsen and Hamsun to the contemporary fiction and crime writing that continues to find readers worldwide.

At University College London, this four-year full-time programme draws on UCL's exceptional strength in Slavonic and East European languages through the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, combined with its Scandinavian studies provision. SSEES is one of the foremost centres for the study of Eastern European languages and cultures in the world, and its expertise in Bulgarian is combined with the high standards of language teaching that characterise all UCL modern languages programmes. You will develop advanced proficiency in both Bulgarian and Norwegian, study their literatures and cultures in depth, and engage with the historical and contemporary contexts that give each language its meaning and significance.
