Bulgarian and Romanian

Bulgarian and Romanian is an exceptional combination that brings together two South Slavic and Romance languages from the Balkans and Eastern Europe, opening access to cultures that are underrepresented in British university curricula but that carry rich literary and historical traditions and are of growing economic and political significance. Bulgarian is the official language of Bulgaria and one of the oldest written Slavic languages, while Romanian is a Romance language with its own distinctive literary history, the official language of Romania and Moldova. Both countries are members of the European Union, and both have experienced profound transformation since 1989.

At University College London, this four-year, full-time programme is offered within the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, the UK's leading centre for the academic study of this region. You will develop competence in both Bulgarian and Romanian languages, reading literary and cultural texts in the original and engaging with the histories, literatures, and contemporary cultures of both countries. The programme examines the historical dynamics of the Balkans and Eastern Europe, including the Ottoman and Habsburg legacies, the communist period, and the post-1989 transitions that have shaped both societies.

Linguistic study is integrated with cultural and historical analysis throughout. A typical entry tariff of 152 UCAS points reflects UCL's academic expectations.

This combination produces graduates with knowledge and language skills that are genuinely rare, and with a deep understanding of a region that matters increasingly to European and international affairs.

Graduates pursue careers in diplomacy, journalism, international organisations, business with Romanian and Bulgarian interests, translation, NGO work, and academic research. Many proceed to postgraduate study in Slavonic studies, Eastern European politics, or international relations.
