About this course

Business computing sits at the junction of two disciplines that are increasingly difficult to separate in the modern workplace. Computing provides the technical skills to build and maintain information systems, work with data, and design software solutions. Business provides the strategic and organisational context that determines which systems are needed, how they should work, and what value they create.

Together they produce graduates who can speak both languages fluently, which is an increasingly rare and valuable capability as digital transformation reshapes organisations across every sector.

At Birkbeck College, this four-year full-time programme is designed with a focus on real-world applications and the rapidly evolving nature of information technology, making it well suited to those who are eager to develop valuable technical and commercial skills. You will study programming, databases, systems analysis, and software development alongside business strategy, management, and the economics of digital markets. The programme includes a foundation year, which provides a supported entry point for students who may not have traditional qualifications in computing or business but who have the motivation and aptitude to succeed in the degree.

Birkbeck's London location gives access to an extensive network of technology and business organisations. Typical entry requires around 88 tariff points.

Business computing graduates are well positioned for roles that bridge the technical and commercial sides of organisations. Systems analysis, business analysis, project management, IT consultancy, software development, and digital transformation roles are all natural destinations. The combination of business awareness and technical competence also supports careers in product management, data management, and technology strategy.

Many graduates go on to further study in areas such as information systems, management, or specialist areas of computing, deepening their expertise for more senior roles.

Exceeded expectations
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good transpor…
