About this course

Business economics applies economic theory and analytical methods to the decisions and problems that organisations face in real markets. Where general economics asks broad questions about how economies function, business economics sharpens that lens onto pricing, competition, market structure, resource allocation and the strategic behaviour of firms. It is a rigorous discipline that rewards people who want to understand not just what happens in markets but why.

At Cardiff University you will follow this three-year full-time degree, developing a strong foundation in both microeconomics and macroeconomics before applying that knowledge to business contexts. You will study how firms make decisions under different competitive conditions, how markets can fail and how regulation responds, how financial markets work and how they influence business strategy, and how quantitative methods can be used to analyse data and test economic hypotheses. Cardiff's strong economics faculty and location as the Welsh capital, with its mix of public sector, financial services and private business, provides a stimulating context for studying these questions.

The degree develops the ability to build and evaluate economic arguments, to work with data confidently and to think clearly under conditions of uncertainty. These are not narrowly vocational skills but intellectual capabilities that transfer across a wide range of professional settings. You will also develop facility with the kind of quantitative reasoning that is increasingly valued across business, finance and policy environments.

Graduates from business economics programmes are well prepared for careers in financial services, management consultancy, economic research, government and regulatory bodies, marketing analytics and corporate strategy. The analytical foundations of the degree also make it an excellent preparation for postgraduate study in economics, business, finance or public policy, and for professional qualifications in accounting and finance.
