About this course

Business management is the study of how organisations are created, directed and sustained in a complex and changing environment. It draws on economics, psychology, sociology and mathematics to understand the challenges that businesses face and the frameworks available for addressing them, covering strategy, leadership, marketing, operations, finance and organisational behaviour. For students who need additional preparation before university-level study, an integrated foundation year provides the academic grounding and confidence to progress smoothly into the full undergraduate programme.

At the University of Cumbria, this four-year full-time programme begins with that foundation year before moving into the core business management curriculum. You will develop understanding of what drives organisational performance and build the leadership, communication and analytical skills that effective managers need. Strategy and marketing are central themes, as are the operations and financial dimensions of running organisations well.

The programme includes a work placement component, giving you direct professional experience that allows you to apply your learning in a real business context and build the professional credentials that employers value.

Business management graduates work across virtually every sector of the economy. Roles in general management, project management, marketing, human resources, operations and finance are all accessible to graduates with a business management background. The programme prepares you both for immediate employment and for progression into more senior management roles over the course of a career.

Some graduates go on to postgraduate study in business administration, management, marketing or a specialist area of business, while others pursue professional qualifications in accounting, human resources or project management alongside their early careers. The foundation year and placement experience together make this a programme that takes students from wherever they are and prepares them thoroughly for professional life.

Exceeded expectations
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” the city is a br…

Solid, with caveats
Overall a solid programme but worth going in with open eyes. The best part: the consulting projects with real companies genuinely prepare you for the working world. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. O…
