About this course

Business psychology applies the science of human behaviour and mental processes to the world of work and organisations. It examines why people behave as they do in professional settings, how they manage their careers, how they work in teams, what motivates and engages them, and how individual differences in personality, cognition, and values shape performance and wellbeing. The field sits at the boundary of psychology and management, drawing on empirical research to address practical questions about selection, leadership, motivation, organisational culture, and change.

At Birkbeck College, this three-year full-time BSc Business Psychology combines knowledge at the individual and organisational level, giving you a grounded understanding of both psychological science and business fundamentals. You will study core areas of organisational psychology, including work motivation, leadership, team dynamics, occupational health, and career development, alongside an introduction to key business disciplines such as management, marketing, and strategy. This dual focus means you will graduate with the ability to think rigorously about human behaviour in organisations and to connect that thinking to practical business questions.

Birkbeck's London location and its distinctive adult-education tradition give the programme a close connection to professional life, and you will be taught by staff who combine research expertise with applied experience.

You will develop skills in psychological research methods, data interpretation, written analysis, and professional communication, all of which are valued by employers in business, consultancy, HR, and people management roles.

Graduates of business psychology go on to careers in human resources, talent management, organisational development, occupational psychology, management consultancy, recruitment, and leadership development. Many also move into broader management roles, where their psychological insight gives them a distinctive advantage. Postgraduate study in occupational psychology, business psychology, or human resource management is a well-supported route, and for those who wish to practise as registered occupational psychologists, further study is required.
