About this course

Business as a degree subject is concerned with understanding how organisations function, compete and create value. It draws on economics, finance, marketing, strategy, operations, organisational behaviour and management theory to give you a broad and rigorous grounding in how businesses are run and how they respond to the challenges of competitive markets, technological change, globalisation and social expectation. The discipline develops both analytical ability and practical understanding, training you to think clearly about complex organisational problems and to communicate your thinking effectively.

This three-year full-time degree at the University of Exeter includes a sandwich year with a work placement and a year abroad, giving you substantial professional and international experience embedded in the programme. Students who have taken this degree have found the experience diverse, engaging and excellent preparation for what follows. Throughout the course you will study the core functional areas of business, developing skills in financial analysis, marketing strategy, operations management, leadership and business research alongside a broader understanding of the economic and social environment in which organisations operate.

The combination of academic rigour and real-world application that characterises the programme reflects Exeter's strong reputation in business education.

Business graduates pursue careers across virtually every sector and function, including management, consulting, finance, marketing, operations, entrepreneurship, the civil service and the voluntary sector. The versatility of a business degree reflects the breadth of skills it develops: analytical thinking, numerical competence, communication, teamwork and the ability to understand and address complex organisational problems. Further study at postgraduate level, including MBA programmes and specialist master's degrees in marketing, finance, strategy or management, is a well-trodden route for graduates aiming for senior roles or specialist careers.
