Celtic & Anglo-Saxon Studies and Sociology

Celtic and Anglo-Saxon studies combined with sociology brings together two disciplines that, from different directions, ask fundamental questions about human societies and how they are structured, experienced, and transmitted across time. Celtic and Anglo-Saxon studies examines the cultures, languages, literatures, and histories of the Celtic and Germanic peoples who shaped the early medieval world across Britain, Ireland, and much of northern Europe, including the Scandinavian traditions that intersected with both. Sociology examines how society shapes individuals and groups in contemporary and modern contexts, asking how power, class, gender, race, and culture produce the social worlds we inhabit.

At Aberdeen this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, enriching your understanding of both the historical cultures you are studying and the social forces that continue to shape different societies. The Celtic and Anglo-Saxon studies component gives you a comprehensive grounding in the lives and legacy of these peoples, their languages and literatures in original and translation, and the material and cultural evidence through which their worlds can be reconstructed. The sociology component develops your ability to analyse contemporary society critically, using the theoretical frameworks and empirical methods of social science to understand how individuals and groups are shaped by the structures around them.

Together, the two subjects develop a powerful combination of historical depth and contemporary social analysis.

Graduates find careers in heritage, museums and archives, education, research, journalism, social policy, the civil service, and the voluntary sector.
