Celtic Civilistion/History

Celtic civilisation and history is a combination that brings together two complementary ways of understanding the long and rich story of the Celtic peoples of Europe. Celtic civilisation immerses you in the history of the Celts, from their earliest appearances on the European continent through to the present-day communities of the British Isles and beyond, examining their societies, literature, material culture, art, religion and languages as they developed and changed across millennia. History provides the methodological tools, the analytical frameworks and the broader chronological and contextual knowledge needed to situate Celtic culture within the larger sweep of European history and to understand it in relation to the Roman, Germanic, Norse and other traditions with which it has interacted.

At the University of Glasgow you will study both disciplines within one of Scotland's leading universities, located in a city that is itself part of the living heritage of Celtic culture and history in Scotland. The programme runs over four years full time, reflecting the Scottish honours degree structure, and includes a year abroad, which gives you the opportunity to pursue your studies in a different national and academic environment, potentially including time in Ireland, Wales or other regions with strong Celtic heritage.

You will develop skills in primary source analysis, historical research, literary and cultural criticism, the study of Celtic languages, and extended academic writing. The combination of humanistic and historical methods is both intellectually rich and practically transferable.
