Celtic studies and French is a degree that brings together two quite different but equally serious linguistic and cultural traditions. Celtic studies provides the opportunity to engage with the languages, literatures and cultures of the Celtic-speaking peoples, encompassing Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh and the historical traditions of Breton, Cornish and Manx alongside the rich medieval and modern cultural heritage of the British Isles. French, meanwhile, is one of the world's major literary and diplomatic languages, giving access to a tradition that has shaped European and global culture profoundly and remains of great contemporary significance.

At Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme gives you the time to develop genuine expertise in both fields. The Celtic studies department at Glasgow has a distinguished tradition, and the programme benefits from the university's particular strengths in Gaelic language and culture, which connect to Scotland's own linguistic heritage. You will develop language skills in both traditions, study literature and cultural history, and engage with the contemporary significance of Celtic languages in the context of language revitalisation and minority culture.

A sandwich year and a work placement are built into the programme, giving you professional experience that may connect to the cultural, educational or linguistic sectors where both sets of skills are valued.

Graduates of Celtic studies and language combinations move into careers in education, translation and interpreting, journalism, broadcasting in Celtic language media, heritage and cultural organisations, the arts and the civil service. The rare combination of French and Celtic language expertise is particularly relevant in cultural institutions, academic research and organisations committed to language and heritage preservation. Postgraduate study in Celtic studies, linguistics, French or translation is a natural progression.
