Central & East European Studies/History of Art

Central and East European studies combined with history of art is a pairing that opens rich territory at the intersection of language, culture, and visual understanding. Central and East European studies encompasses the languages, histories, literatures, and contemporary social and political realities of a diverse group of countries that have been shaped by the legacies of empire, communist rule, and post-1989 transformation. History of art asks how and why paintings, sculptures, buildings, and other objects come to look the way they do, situating visual culture within the social, religious, political, and intellectual contexts that produce it.

This part-time programme at the University of Glasgow includes a year abroad, which is particularly valuable for developing the language skills and cultural understanding that Central and East European studies demands. You will develop proficiency in at least one language of the region, engage with the literary, historical, and political traditions of the countries you study, and develop your visual analysis skills through the history of art strand, with particular opportunity to engage with the rich artistic traditions of Central and Eastern Europe, from medieval religious painting and baroque architecture to the avant-gardes of the early twentieth century and contemporary art.

Graduates of this combination move into careers that draw on their regional expertise and visual literacy, including roles in diplomacy, cultural institutions, galleries and museums, the arts sector, journalism, non-governmental organisations, and business roles focused on the region. The language skills in particular open professional opportunities in a part of Europe that remains underserved by English-language graduates with genuine regional knowledge. Further postgraduate study in history of art, area studies, European studies, or cultural heritage is a natural extension for those who wish to pursue academic or specialist professional careers.
