Central & East European Studies/History
Central and East European studies and history is a combination of unusual intellectual depth and contemporary relevance. The countries of Central and Eastern Europe, encompassing Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, the Balkans, the Baltic states, and the former Soviet republics, have some of the most turbulent and significant histories in the world: the region was the theatre of both world wars, the site of the Holocaust, the centre of Cold War geopolitics, and the scene of remarkable democratic transitions in 1989 and beyond. Understanding this part of the world demands both historical depth and regional specificity, which this joint programme provides.
At the University of Glasgow, this four-year, full-time programme draws on teaching staff with research expertise spanning Scottish, British, European, American, and global history, including specialist strengths in slavery studies, gender history, and the history of war, intelligence, and genocide. The history strand takes you across a wide chronological and geographical range, from medieval to modern times, developing skills in archival research, historiographical analysis, and critical writing. The Central and East European studies strand adds the regional and linguistic depth needed to engage seriously with this part of the world.
The programme includes a year abroad, giving you immersive experience in the region and broadening your academic perspective. A typical entry tariff of 200 points reflects the demanding and selective nature of the programme.
