About this course

Chemical engineering applies the principles of chemistry, physics, and mathematics to the design and operation of industrial processes that convert raw materials and energy into useful products safely, efficiently, and sustainably. From pharmaceuticals and petrochemicals to food processing, plastics, and advanced materials, the work of chemical engineers is present in virtually every manufactured product and in the infrastructure of modern economies. As industries face growing pressure to reduce their environmental impact and transition to more sustainable processes, chemical engineers are at the centre of finding solutions.

At Sheffield Hallam University, this four-year full-time degree is built around practical and project-based learning with a strong emphasis on solving real industrial challenges. You will develop knowledge of core chemical engineering topics including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, reaction engineering, and process design, learning to apply these to the design of safe, sustainable, and economically viable industrial plants and processes. A sandwich year and work placement opportunities are integrated into the degree, giving you hands-on industry experience alongside your academic studies.
