About this course

Chemical engineering transforms raw materials into the products that modern life depends on, from fuels and pharmaceuticals to plastics, food products, and semiconductors, by designing and scaling up the physical and chemical processes that make this transformation possible. It is one of the most diverse of the engineering disciplines, combining chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and engineering design in ways that must account for safety, efficiency, sustainability, and cost at scales ranging from laboratory experiments to industrial plants that span entire sites.

At Newcastle, this four-year full-time programme combines a year in industry with a year abroad, giving you both extensive professional experience in a chemical engineering role and the opportunity to study engineering in an international context. You will study the core disciplines of chemical engineering, including thermodynamics, reaction engineering, transport phenomena, process design, and safety and sustainability, developing both the technical knowledge and the professional competencies needed for industry. The programme explores one of the most diverse engineering fields, teaching you to sustainably convert raw materials into useful products from bench-top to industrial scale.

Graduates of chemical engineering programmes work in the oil and gas industry, pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, food and drink, consumer goods, nuclear energy, water treatment, and a wide range of process industries.
