About this course

Chemical physics sits at the interface of two foundational natural sciences, using the mathematical precision and physical insight of physics to investigate chemical systems at the molecular and quantum level. It asks questions about how molecules absorb light, how chemical reactions proceed at surfaces, how electrons move through molecular materials, and how the principles of quantum mechanics explain the properties of matter that chemistry describes. The discipline is intellectually demanding and technically rich, and it drives advances in areas from solar energy and drug design to novel materials and atmospheric science.

At Edinburgh, which ranks first in the UK for chemistry research and in the top five for physics, this programme offers exceptional depth in both disciplines within a world-leading research environment. You will study the core principles of both chemistry and physics, moving progressively into the molecular and quantum territory where the two disciplines meet and illuminate each other.
