About this course

Chemistry is the science of matter, studying what substances are made of, how they interact, and how they can be transformed. It is a central discipline of the natural sciences, underpinning biology, medicine, materials science, and environmental science, and it has driven some of the most consequential advances in human welfare, from the development of pharmaceutical drugs to the synthesis of new materials with remarkable properties. Chemistry requires both rigorous mathematical and physical reasoning and the practical skill of working carefully and creatively in the laboratory, and it trains a way of thinking about the material world that is both precise and imaginative.

At the University of Oxford, this four-year full-time programme takes you through chemistry in unusual depth. The four years rather than the standard three allow the curriculum to develop each area of the discipline more fully and to reach the frontier of current research more completely than a shorter degree permits. You will study organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry alongside theoretical and computational approaches, progressing from foundational principles to advanced topics in synthesis, spectroscopy, kinetics, and molecular structure.

Laboratory work is central throughout, developing practical skill and the ability to design and interpret experiments.
