About this course

Green chemistry is the discipline that applies chemistry to the creation of products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances, developing more sustainable ways of making the chemicals that industry, medicine and everyday life depend on. It represents a fundamental shift in how chemists think about their work, from focusing purely on what a reaction produces to considering the entire lifecycle of materials, solvents, energy use and waste. As the pressure on industry to reduce its environmental footprint intensifies, green chemistry and sustainable process design have moved from specialist interest to core concern across the chemical industry.

At the University of York, this four-year full-time programme, which includes a year abroad and a sandwich year with work placement, develops you as an adaptable chemist through research-led practical and classroom sessions. You will develop strong foundations in organic, inorganic and physical chemistry alongside dedicated study of green chemistry principles, sustainable process design, solvent selection, atom economy, life cycle assessment and the industrial application of sustainable chemistry. York has a particularly strong reputation in green chemistry and sustainable processes, reflecting genuine institutional commitment to this area, and the year abroad gives you an international scientific perspective.

The sandwich year places you in an industrial or research environment, giving you professional experience and contacts alongside your academic qualification.

Chemistry graduates with expertise in green and sustainable chemistry are sought by pharmaceutical companies, the agrochemical industry, consumer goods manufacturers, energy companies and materials firms, all of which face growing regulatory and commercial pressure to reduce environmental impact. Career roles include process chemist, research chemist, formulation scientist, sustainability consultant and regulatory specialist. Further study at master's or doctoral level in green chemistry, sustainable chemistry, chemical engineering or process chemistry is a natural progression for those drawn to research or advanced industrial roles.
