About this course

Chemistry is the central science, connecting the physical sciences to biology, medicine, materials, and the environment. It is the study of matter: its structure, properties, and the transformations it undergoes in chemical reactions. Chemists work at scales from the subatomic, determining how electrons govern reactivity, to the industrial, designing processes that produce fuels, pharmaceuticals, and materials at enormous scale.

Without chemistry, modern medicine, food production, and advanced materials would be impossible, and addressing the environmental challenges of the twenty-first century will depend significantly on chemical innovation.

At the University of Durham, this four-year full-time programme is offered as Chemistry via the International Route, a structure that incorporates extended international academic content and a sandwich placement year with a work placement. Durham's chemistry department is among the strongest in the UK, with world-class research in synthetic chemistry, theoretical chemistry, and chemical physics. You will study core chemistry across organic, inorganic, and physical domains, developing both theoretical understanding and substantial practical laboratory skills across all four years.

The international route provides an academic structure that is well suited to students with international educational backgrounds, and the sandwich placement year gives you extended professional experience in a chemical or research environment, which is highly valued by employers in the chemical sciences.

Graduates in chemistry from Durham go on to careers in pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, materials science, energy, environmental science, chemical engineering, and research. Many pursue postgraduate degrees, which are common routes into academic and industrial research careers in the chemical sciences. Others move into patent law, science communication, teaching, or management roles in the chemical industry.

Durham's strong employer connections and research reputation make it an excellent launchpad for careers across the full range of chemical sciences.
