About this course

Chemistry, the atmosphere and the environment is a degree that applies the methods and knowledge of chemistry to some of the most urgent questions facing humanity. The atmosphere is a complex chemical system, and understanding how human activities alter its composition, how pollutants are produced and destroyed, how climate change is driven by changes in greenhouse gas concentrations, and how we can design more sustainable chemical processes and products requires deep chemical knowledge applied to real-world environmental challenges.

At the University of York, the four-year full-time programme develops your core chemistry knowledge across organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, before applying it to atmospheric and environmental systems. You will study the chemical reactions that drive climate change, the chemistry of air and water pollution, the principles of green chemistry and how they can be applied to reduce the environmental impact of chemical synthesis and manufacturing. The degree includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you professional experience in a chemistry or environmental science context.
