Chemistry

Chemistry is the science that explains the material world at the level of atoms, molecules and the reactions between them. It underpins virtually every other science and technology, from the development of new medicines and materials to the understanding of environmental processes and the design of cleaner energy systems. Chemistry addresses some of the most fundamental questions it is possible to ask about matter, and the discipline's practical and analytical tools are essential across an enormous range of industries and research fields.

At the University of Keele you will study for three years full-time, exploring the full breadth of the discipline from core chemical structure and reactivity through to the role chemistry plays in addressing global economic and environmental challenges. You will have hands-on access to modern laboratory facilities, developing practical skills alongside theoretical understanding in a curriculum that builds professional competence as well as scientific knowledge. The programme includes a sandwich year in professional practice and a year abroad, giving you extended industry experience and an international scientific perspective that significantly enriches both your career prospects and your understanding of how chemistry is practised across different research and commercial contexts.

Chemistry graduates work in pharmaceutical, fine chemical, agrochemical, materials, polymer, environmental, forensic and food science industries, as well as in research institutions, government agencies and education. The analytical and problem-solving skills the degree develops are valued across a wide range of scientific and non-scientific careers, including finance, law and management, where employers recognise the rigour of a chemistry training. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, chemical engineering or pharmacology, or train for professional qualifications in areas such as patent law or environmental consultancy.
