Chemistry

Chemistry is the science of matter at the molecular and atomic level, concerned with the structure, properties, and behaviour of substances and the reactions through which one substance is transformed into another. It is one of the central natural sciences, sitting between physics and biology and providing the conceptual and practical foundation for understanding the physical world at the scale where most of the interesting things happen. The applications of chemistry are vast, spanning pharmaceuticals, materials science, food science, environmental chemistry, forensics, energy, and nanotechnology, among many others.

At the University of the West of Scotland, Chemistry is offered on a part-time basis, including a sandwich year, a year abroad option, and a work placement, making it accessible to students who need to manage their studies alongside other commitments while still gaining substantial professional and international experience. You will develop your theoretical understanding of organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry alongside the practical laboratory skills that professional chemists need, learning how to design experiments, interpret data, and work safely with chemical substances in laboratory environments.

Chemistry graduates are among the most versatile in the sciences. The pharmaceutical, fine chemicals, agrochemical, food, materials, and environmental sectors all employ chemists in research and development, quality assurance, analytical work, and regulatory roles. Forensic science, environmental monitoring, and clinical biochemistry are further destinations.

Many graduates also move into teaching, science communication, and patent work, where the breadth of chemical knowledge and the rigour of scientific thinking the degree develops are directly applicable.
