About this course

Chemistry is one of the central sciences, concerned with the composition, structure, properties, and transformation of matter at the molecular and atomic level. It provides the understanding that underpins drug discovery and pharmaceutical manufacturing, the development of new materials, environmental monitoring, food science, and the chemical processes that underlie living systems. At degree level, chemistry develops both deep theoretical understanding and the practical laboratory skills to investigate chemical questions experimentally.

At the University of East Anglia, this four-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing an accessible route into a rigorous scientific degree. The foundation year is designed to build the mathematical and scientific background needed before the main chemistry programme begins, making the degree available to students who are committed to studying chemistry but may not have the full A-level chemistry background typically required for direct entry. Once in the main programme, you will study organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry as integrated fields, developing your knowledge of molecular structure, bonding and reactivity, thermodynamics, kinetics, spectroscopy, and synthesis.

Laboratory work is central throughout, and you will develop the practical skills that professional chemists need in research and industrial settings. UEA has a well-regarded chemistry school with research activity in areas including green chemistry, materials, and chemical biology. A typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points applies for the programme.

Chemistry develops rigorous analytical thinking, quantitative reasoning, experimental design, and precise communication of technical findings.
