Chemistry

Chemistry is one of the central sciences, sitting between physics and biology and providing the molecular understanding that underpins medicine, materials, energy, and the environment. It asks how matter is structured, how substances interact and transform, and how we can synthesise new compounds with specific properties. This programme at Nottingham Trent University is a four-year, full-time degree that begins with a foundation year. The foundation year is designed to ensure that students who may not have the standard chemistry A-level background can develop a thorough grounding in the core sciences and academic skills before progressing to the main degree. Once you move into the degree proper, you will study organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry in depth, learning to work confidently in laboratory settings as well as developing your theoretical understanding.

You will engage with analytical techniques that chemists use to identify and characterise substances, and you will begin to appreciate how the principles you study apply in industrial and research contexts. The programme is based in Nottingham and delivered in full-time mode.

Chemistry at degree level develops a distinctive way of thinking. You will learn to approach problems systematically, to design experiments and interpret results critically, and to communicate technical findings to both specialist and non-specialist audiences. Precision, patience, and creativity are all cultivated through laboratory and project work.
