About this course

Chemistry with materials chemistry combines the foundational principles of chemical science with focused study of the materials that enable modern technology and address global challenges. Materials chemistry sits at the interface of chemistry, physics, and engineering, concerned with the design, synthesis, and characterisation of substances with tailored properties for applications ranging from energy storage and conversion to biomedical devices and electronics. Understanding how atomic and molecular structure determines macroscopic properties is one of the most productive and practically significant skills a chemist can possess, and it underpins everything from the design of new pharmaceuticals to the development of lightweight structural materials and more efficient solar cells.

At Keele this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, giving you the preparatory stage to build the mathematical and scientific foundations you need before you enter the main chemistry curriculum. Once in the degree, you will study the major areas of chemical science alongside specialist materials chemistry content, guided in part by researchers working at the frontiers of the field.
