About this course

Chemistry has been called the central science, and with good reason. It sits at the intersection of physics and biology, underpins the development of new materials, medicines, and energy technologies, and provides the molecular-level understanding that drives innovation across virtually every sector of the modern economy. Adding mathematics to chemistry deepens that understanding further, equipping you with the quantitative tools to model complex systems, interpret experimental data rigorously, and engage with the theoretical foundations of the discipline.

At the University of St Andrews, this five-year MChem programme teaches you the fundamentals of chemistry from the composition and properties of matter through to synthesis of new molecules and materials. You will study the critical role chemistry plays in areas such as pharmaceuticals, clean water provision, energy generation, and sustainable food production. The mathematical component strengthens your ability to handle the quantitative dimensions of chemistry, from thermodynamics and quantum mechanics to data analysis and computational modelling.

St Andrews' chemistry interfaces with biology, physics, medicine, and geology, giving the degree a breadth that opens routes into diverse fields. This programme includes a year abroad, providing the opportunity to study or undertake research at an international institution, enriching your scientific perspective and building global professional connections. The typical entry tariff is 232 UCAS points.

Graduates of chemistry with mathematics programmes are sought after in pharmaceuticals, materials science, chemical engineering, environmental science, energy technology, and academic research. The MChem qualification is recognised by the Royal Society of Chemistry as the foundation for Chartered Chemist status, and St Andrews' research-intensive environment means many graduates go on to doctoral study. Roles in data science and quantitative analysis are also accessible given the strong mathematical training the degree provides.

Highly recommend
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” local cost of living …

Genuinely worthwhile
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable …
