Childhood: Health and Wellbeing

Childhood health and wellbeing brings together knowledge from public health, child development, psychology, education and social policy to understand what children need in order to thrive. Childhood is a period of rapid physical, cognitive and emotional growth, and the conditions in which children develop, the care they receive, the environments they inhabit, and the relationships they form have lasting consequences for their health and life chances. This programme equips students to understand those conditions and to work across the agencies and professions that serve children and their families.

At Nottingham Trent, this three-year programme draws on interdisciplinary perspectives to give you a thorough grounding in child development, children's physical and mental health, family dynamics, safeguarding, health promotion, nutrition in childhood, the impact of poverty and social disadvantage, and the policy landscape surrounding children's services. You will examine evidence from developmental psychology, epidemiology, social work, education and public health, developing the ability to assess situations, interpret research and contribute to work with children in a range of professional contexts. The typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points.

Graduates work in health visiting, early years education and care, school nursing, family support services, children's social care, community health promotion, charities working with children and young people, and a range of related local authority and NHS roles. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in public health, social work, nursing, health promotion or early childhood education, which leads to registration with a relevant professional body. The programme's interdisciplinary nature means graduates are equipped to understand and navigate the complex, multi-agency environments in which children's health and wellbeing work takes place.
