Childhood Practice

Childhood practice is a professional and academic degree that develops your ability to support the learning, wellbeing, and development of children from infancy through to the early years of primary education. It is grounded in understanding how children grow and learn, what they need from the adults and environments around them, and how practitioners can create conditions in which every child thrives. The discipline draws on developmental psychology, education theory, social policy, and ethics, while remaining rooted in the real experiences of working with young children and their families.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands you will study across four years on a full-time programme. A distinguishing feature of this degree is that you are supported, monitored, and assessed within a workplace setting, meaning your academic learning and your professional practice develop in close dialogue with each other. You will complete course tasks both independently and under guidance from your lecturer, and the workplace context means that theory is immediately tested against the realities of practice with children.

You will study child development, curriculum frameworks, inclusive practice, safeguarding, leadership in early years settings, and the policy context that shapes how childhood provision is organised and funded in Scotland. Critical reflection is central to the degree: you will be expected to analyse your own practice, draw on current research, and develop the professional judgement that distinguishes an effective childhood practitioner from a technically competent one.

Graduates of childhood practice typically work as senior practitioners, room leaders, or managers in nurseries, early years centres, and primary school early years settings. In Scotland the degree supports progression towards the Scottish Social Services Council registration requirements for those working at leadership level in early learning and childcare. Further study at postgraduate level in early childhood education, social work, or educational leadership is a natural next step for those who wish to move into management, advisory, or academic roles within the sector.
