Childhood & Youth and Education

Childhood, Youth and Education is a multidisciplinary programme that examines the experiences, circumstances and social contexts of children and young people, alongside the educational institutions and practices that shape their development. It draws on sociology, politics, history, social policy and cultural studies to explore the issues and challenges that children and young people face today, both in the UK and globally. Education, meanwhile, is concerned with how knowledge is transmitted, how learning is structured, and how formal and informal educational contexts shape individuals and societies.

Studied together, these fields give you a rich and critical understanding of the formative years of human life.

At Liverpool Hope University, this full-time three-year programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and work placement opportunities, giving you substantial professional and international experience that deepens your understanding of childhood, youth and education across different cultural and policy contexts. You will explore key questions about children and young people in their social contexts, examining how inequality, culture, policy and practice shape their opportunities and wellbeing. The placement and international experiences connect your academic learning to professional realities in education, youth work, social care and related fields.

Graduates from Childhood, Youth and Education programmes go on to careers in teaching (following completion of professional qualifications such as a PGCE), youth work, early years provision, social work, education policy, community development, children's charity work, school support services and international development with a focus on children's rights and education. The breadth of the degree keeps a genuinely wide range of professional options open, and many graduates go on to postgraduate study in education, social work, youth studies or policy research.
