Children and Young People's Nursing

Children and young people's nursing is a profession built on the understanding that children are not simply small adults. Their physiological, psychological, and developmental needs are distinct at every stage from infancy through adolescence, and nurses who specialise in working with them must combine clinical expertise with an ability to communicate sensitively with patients who may be frightened, in pain, and unable to articulate their symptoms clearly. Family-centred care is a fundamental principle: parents and carers are partners in the care of a sick child, and children's nurses must work effectively with the whole family unit.

At the University of East Anglia this three-year full-time degree, which leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, divides your time between academic study and supervised clinical practice. In your studies you will cover child development, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, mental health, safeguarding, and the evidence base for nursing interventions across a range of settings. Your clinical placements will take you into hospital wards, community settings, specialist units, and school nursing environments, giving you experience of the breadth of the children's nursing role.

The programme is demanding and rewarding in equal measure, requiring compassion, resilience, and a commitment to continuous learning.

Qualifying as a children's and young people's nurse opens a career in one of the most meaningful areas of healthcare. Newly qualified nurses typically begin in hospital or community posts, and with experience can move into specialist areas such as oncology, intensive care, neonatal nursing, or adolescent mental health. Leadership, education, advanced clinical practice, and research are all available as career progressions.

The qualification is internationally recognised, and many graduates choose to work abroad at some point in their careers. Postgraduate study is available for those who wish to specialise or move into academic or advanced practice roles.
