Civil and Environmental Engineering

Civil and environmental engineering addresses the infrastructure that underpins modern society and the natural systems that sustain it. Roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, water treatment works, ports, and buildings all require civil engineering expertise for their design, construction, and maintenance. Environmental engineering adds the critical dimension of sustainability, pollution control, and the protection of water, soil, and air resources to this infrastructure challenge.

As climate change, urbanisation, and resource scarcity intensify, the two fields are increasingly inseparable.

At the University of Strathclyde you will study across five years on a full-time programme, with a year abroad that extends your engineering education to an international context. Strathclyde is a leading engineering university with a long tradition of applied research and industry partnership in civil engineering. The programme develops the core engineering sciences, structural mechanics, geotechnics, hydraulics, fluid dynamics, and construction management, alongside environmental engineering content covering water quality and treatment, waste management, air pollution, and sustainable design.

You will develop strong analytical and design skills, learning to apply engineering judgement to real problems in contexts that range from structural assessment to environmental impact analysis. Graduates of civil and environmental engineering work across the built environment and environmental sectors. Consulting engineers, contractors, local authorities, water utilities, national infrastructure agencies, and environmental consultancies are all major employers. Roles in structural design, project engineering, environmental assessment, water engineering, and geotechnical investigation are all common directions.

Strathclyde MEng graduates are well positioned for chartered engineering status with the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management. International development and humanitarian engineering are further directions for those drawn to the global infrastructure and environmental challenges the degree prepares you to address.
