About this course

Civil and structural engineering together address some of the most fundamental challenges in the built and natural environment. Civil engineering concerns itself with the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure, including roads, bridges, tunnels, water systems, and the foundations on which buildings rest. Structural engineering focuses more specifically on the load-bearing elements of buildings and structures, ensuring that they can withstand the forces they will encounter throughout their lives.

Both disciplines are central to addressing global challenges in climate, sustainability, and environmental impact.

At the University of Leeds, this five-year full-time industrial degree includes a sandwich year, giving you a full year of professional experience in a civil or structural engineering environment before your final year, as well as work placement opportunities throughout the programme. You will develop expertise across both disciplines, building the knowledge and skills to contribute to projects that protect people and minimise environmental impact, from safe buildings and infrastructure through to sustainable drainage and flood resilience. Civil and structural engineering graduates are in sustained demand across the construction, consultancy, infrastructure, and public sector.
