About this course

Civil and structural engineering addresses the design, construction, and maintenance of the infrastructure that underpins modern society. Civil engineering encompasses the full range of built infrastructure, from roads, bridges, and tunnels to drainage systems, flood defences, and urban development. Structural engineering focuses specifically on the load-bearing elements of buildings and other structures, ensuring that they can withstand the forces they are subjected to across their lifetime.

Together they form one of the oldest and most essential of the engineering disciplines, combining mathematical rigour with physical intuition and a growing commitment to sustainability and resilience.

At the University of Liverpool, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study structural and civil engineering in another country, experiencing different approaches to design, construction practice, and engineering education. The four-year structure leads to the MEng qualification, which is the standard route to chartered engineer status and is required for progression to the most senior roles in the profession. You will study structural analysis, geotechnics, hydraulics, construction materials, project management, and the design of infrastructure systems, developing both the quantitative skills and the engineering judgement that professional practice demands.
