About this course

Civil engineering with architecture is a degree for those who want to understand both the structural and the spatial dimensions of the built environment, developing expertise in the technical engineering of structures alongside an understanding of the architect's role in conception, design, and aesthetics. The interaction between civil engineer and architect is one of the most important and often challenging relationships in construction, and graduates who understand both perspectives are exceptionally well placed to work at the boundary between the two disciplines.

At the University of Glasgow this five-year programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in another country and to encounter different traditions of both engineering and architectural design. You will develop a thorough grounding in civil engineering science, including structural mechanics, geotechnics, materials, fluid mechanics, and project management, alongside an understanding of architectural design process, spatial planning, construction technology, and the cultural and aesthetic dimensions of the built environment. The five-year integrated programme is an uncommon combination that produces graduates with a genuinely distinctive skill set.

Graduates with this combination of civil engineering and architectural understanding work in construction, structural engineering, project management, building design, urban development, and infrastructure consultancy. The ability to understand and communicate across the traditionally separate domains of engineering and architecture is a significant professional advantage in complex construction projects where collaboration between these disciplines is essential. The programme provides the academic foundation for progression towards chartered engineer status.

Further study at postgraduate level in structural engineering, construction management, or architectural engineering is also available for those wishing to develop specialist expertise or pursue research at the intersection of the two disciplines.
