About this course

Civil engineering is the discipline responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of the physical infrastructure on which society depends. Roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, water treatment and supply systems, buildings, ports, railways and flood defences are all within the civil engineer's domain. It is one of the oldest engineering disciplines and one of the most essential: without civil engineering, the urban and physical environments that support modern life would simply not exist.

At the same time, civil engineering today faces new challenges in sustainability, climate adaptation, resource efficiency and the need to build and maintain infrastructure in a world of increasing environmental constraints.

At Anglia Ruskin University, this four-year full-time degree develops your knowledge of the principles and practice of civil engineering, covering structural analysis, geotechnics, hydraulics and water engineering, environmental engineering, construction management and professional practice. You will develop the mathematical and analytical skills that underpin rigorous engineering design, alongside practical skills in measurement, materials testing and the use of design and analysis software. The programme is designed to develop professional engineers who can work across the full range of civil engineering contexts, with a grounding in the technical fundamentals alongside awareness of the environmental, social and economic contexts in which civil engineering projects operate.

You will engage with design projects and problem-solving exercises that develop your capacity to apply engineering principles to real construction and infrastructure challenges, and you will build the communication and teamworking skills that professional engineering practice requires.

Graduates from civil engineering degrees move into structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, transport infrastructure, water engineering, construction management, and project management across the built environment. Many pursue Chartered Engineer status through bodies such as the Institution of Civil Engineers, and postgraduate study in civil engineering or a specialist area of infrastructure is a well-supported pathway.
