Civil Engineering

Civil engineering shapes the world we inhabit more directly than almost any other discipline. Roads, bridges, tunnels, flood defences, water treatment systems, high-rise structures and transport networks all bear the mark of civil engineers, who must combine rigorous mathematical and scientific understanding with practical problem-solving and an awareness of the social and environmental contexts in which they work.

Over three years of full-time study at Cardiff University you will build from the foundations of structural mechanics, fluid dynamics and geotechnics to more advanced topics such as structural analysis, transport engineering, water engineering and construction management. The programme emphasises the ability to model and analyse complex systems using both analytical techniques and modern computational tools. You will learn to design structures that are safe and economical, to assess ground conditions and their implications for construction, and to consider the sustainability of engineering decisions across the full life cycle of a project.

Cardiff's location gives access to a range of infrastructure contexts, and the programme connects academic learning to the realities of built environment practice.

Civil engineering develops a particular kind of disciplined thinking, one that must hold together precise quantitative reasoning with big-picture awareness of project constraints, stakeholder needs and environmental impact. You will become comfortable working with uncertainty, iterating through design problems and communicating technical information clearly to a range of audiences.

Graduates from civil engineering programmes enter one of the broadest and most consistently in-demand professions in the UK and globally. Employers span structural and geotechnical consultancies, major contractors, local and national government, utilities, transport authorities and infrastructure developers. The degree provides a strong foundation for working towards chartered engineer status with the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and for postgraduate study in specialisms such as structural engineering, environmental engineering or project management.
