About this course

Civil engineering shapes the built environment that surrounds us every day. Roads, railways, hospitals, offices, schools, infrastructure, water supply, and power systems all depend on civil engineers to design and manage the projects that improve the world we live in and protect the natural environment. At the University of Leeds, this five-year full-time industrial programme combines rigorous civil engineering education with a sandwich year of professional experience, ensuring you graduate as a highly capable engineer with direct knowledge of how the profession works in practice.

You will study structural engineering, geotechnics, hydraulics, transportation, environmental engineering, construction management, and engineering mathematics, developing the breadth of technical knowledge that the profession demands alongside strong analytical and design skills. The work placement is integral to the programme, giving you a full year in a professional civil engineering environment where you will apply your technical training, develop professional relationships, and understand the commercial and contractual realities of construction and infrastructure projects.
