Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is one of the oldest and most fundamental of engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, construction, and maintenance of the infrastructure that societies depend on: roads and bridges, water supply and drainage systems, railways, airports, ports, tunnels, and buildings. Civil engineers shape the physical environment in which people live and work, and their decisions have direct consequences for safety, sustainability, and the quality of life of entire communities. The discipline draws on structural analysis, geotechnics, hydraulics, materials science, and construction management.

At the University of Roehampton, this three-year full-time programme is designed to address global skills needs as well as the requirements of national and regional employers, and to meet the standards of professional bodies. You will study structural engineering, geotechnics, hydraulics, construction technology, and project management, developing both the technical and the professional skills that a civil engineering career requires. The programme includes an integrated foundation year for students who wish to build their mathematical and scientific foundations, as well as a sandwich year with a year abroad and work placement that give you direct professional experience and international exposure.

Civil engineering graduates work in consulting engineering, construction, local and central government, infrastructure management, environmental engineering, and international development. The structural, geotechnical, and hydraulic skills the degree develops are valued across a wide range of infrastructure and environmental projects. Many graduates pursue Chartered Engineer status through the Institution of Civil Engineers, and others continue to postgraduate study in specialised areas of civil or environmental engineering.
