About this course

Civil engineering is the discipline responsible for the built environment that shapes daily life: the roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, water systems, drainage networks, and buildings that allow cities and communities to function. It is among the oldest of the engineering disciplines and remains one of the most consequential, addressing challenges of infrastructure, sustainability, flood risk, and urbanisation that are only growing in urgency. Civil engineers apply mathematics, physics, materials science, and structural analysis to design, construct, and maintain structures and systems that must be safe, durable, and efficient.

At Teesside this four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year and work placement, meaning you will gain substantial professional experience in industry before you graduate. The programme develops a thorough grounding in the mathematical and scientific foundations of engineering, covering algebra, calculus, vectors, matrices, and statistics alongside the structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, and materials knowledge that civil practice requires. You will learn to analyse and solve real engineering problems, to use industry-standard design tools and methods, and to work within the constraints of safety regulation, sustainability requirements, and project management.

The sandwich year is a particularly valuable component: extended experience in a professional environment builds technical competence, professional judgment, and the industry relationships that support career entry.

Civil engineering graduates are in consistent demand. Roles in structural design, infrastructure planning, project management, site engineering, and environmental engineering are among the most direct destinations, with opportunities in consultancies, construction firms, local and national government, utilities, and major infrastructure delivery organisations. Chartered status through the relevant professional bodies is an important milestone for many graduates, and employers in the sector typically support the development process.

Some graduates go on to postgraduate study, particularly where specialisation in geotechnics, hydraulics, structural engineering, or project management is desired.
