Civil Engineering
Civil engineering is the discipline responsible for the infrastructure on which modern life depends: roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, airports, flood defences, water supply and wastewater treatment systems. Civil engineers tackle problems that are simultaneously technical, environmental and social, designing and building structures that must perform reliably over long periods, respond to changing demands and minimise their impact on the natural environment. The profession sits at the centre of some of the most significant challenges facing society, including adapting infrastructure to climate change, building resilient urban systems and delivering sustainable development.
At the University of the West of England, Bristol, this part-time programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, combining professional experience with academic study in a format that suits those who want to develop their engineering career while they study. The degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, which covers the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers, providing a recognised professional foundation. You will study structural mechanics, geotechnics, fluid dynamics, materials science, engineering mathematics, project management and sustainable design, developing both the theoretical knowledge and the practical engineering judgement that the profession demands.

Further study at master's level in civil, structural or environmental engineering is available for those who want to specialise further or advance towards incorporated or chartered status.
