Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is the discipline that designs, builds, and maintains the infrastructure that makes modern society possible, from transport networks and water systems to coastal defences and urban development. It is a profession of both practical consequence and intellectual depth, drawing on structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, geotechnics, environmental science, and materials science to address problems of real scale and complexity. As the world's population becomes increasingly urban and as climate change intensifies pressure on existing infrastructure, the demand for skilled civil engineers has never been greater.

At the University of the West of Scotland this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in another country and to encounter different approaches to engineering education and practice. You will develop the technical foundations of civil engineering across structural analysis, fluid mechanics, geotechnics, transport, and environmental engineering, building both the analytical skills and the professional judgement that the discipline requires. The year abroad broadens your understanding of how infrastructure challenges are addressed in different national contexts, which is increasingly valuable in a profession with strong international dimensions.

Civil engineering graduates work across the full breadth of the profession, including in structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, highways and transport, water and environmental engineering, and construction management. Both the public and private sectors employ civil engineers in large numbers, including in local and national government, major infrastructure contractors and consultancies, utilities, and international development organisations. With appropriate further development and experience, graduates can work towards chartered engineer status.

Further study at postgraduate level in civil engineering, structural engineering, or environmental engineering is available for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue research in the discipline.
