About this course

Civil engineering shapes the world that people live in. Roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, water treatment plants, flood defences, airports, and buildings all depend on the work of civil engineers, who apply the principles of mechanics, materials science, fluid dynamics, and structural analysis to design, build, and maintain infrastructure that is safe, durable, and fit for purpose. It is a discipline that combines analytical rigour with practical problem-solving and a long-term perspective: the structures civil engineers design are expected to serve communities for decades.

This four-year full-time programme at the University of Huddersfield includes a foundation year, which provides additional preparatory study in mathematics and engineering science before the main degree begins. This makes the programme accessible to students who are motivated and capable but whose prior qualifications in mathematics or science may not fully meet the standard entry requirements. The programme also includes a sandwich year and a work placement, both of which give you direct professional experience during your studies.
