About this course

Civil engineering is among the oldest of the engineering disciplines, yet it addresses some of the newest and most pressing challenges facing modern societies. Infrastructure, bridges, roads, buildings, water supply systems, coastal defences, and drainage networks, shapes the physical environment that billions of people inhabit, and civil engineers are responsible for designing it, building it, and maintaining it safely over its working life. As cities grow, climate change intensifies, and materials and digital technologies evolve, civil engineering is being transformed as much as any other field.

At the University of Plymouth, this four-year full-time programme with a foundation year provides an accessible pathway for students who want to develop the scientific and engineering foundations needed for degree-level civil engineering study before entering the main programme. The foundation year develops mathematical, physical, and computational skills alongside study skills that prepare students for the rigour of the main degree. The programme develops skills in high-performance computing and artificial intelligence as they apply in engineering contexts, equipping you with modern computational tools alongside classical structural, geotechnical, and hydraulic engineering knowledge.

Practical application through guest lectures and industry engagement connects academic learning to professional engineering practice. A typical entry tariff of 72 points for the foundation pathway applies.

You will develop skills in structural analysis, geotechnics, hydraulics, project management, and sustainable design, alongside proficiency in computational tools relevant to modern civil engineering practice.
