Classical Studies

Classical studies is the interdisciplinary investigation of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds in all their complexity, examining literature, history, philosophy, art, architecture, material culture and the social and political institutions of the civilisations that have shaped the Western tradition most profoundly. It asks what these ancient cultures were actually like on their own terms, how they have been received and reinterpreted by later periods, and what light they shed on the real-world issues of gender, race, environment, power and identity that remain central to contemporary life.

At the University of Edinburgh you will pursue classical studies within one of the world's great research universities, with access to strong collections, distinguished faculty and the intellectual environment of one of Scotland's oldest and most celebrated institutions of learning. The programme runs over four years full time, reflecting the Scottish honours degree structure, and includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different academic environment and to engage directly with ancient Mediterranean landscapes, sites and institutions. Edinburgh's classical studies department engages with the ancient world from multiple disciplinary angles, encompassing literature, history, archaeology and philosophy.

You will develop skills in the analysis of literary and historical texts, the interpretation of material and visual culture, philosophical argument, historical research and extended academic writing. The capacity to engage seriously with very different cultural contexts, to think across disciplinary boundaries and to communicate your thinking clearly are transferable intellectual accomplishments that employers across many sectors value.

Graduates from classical studies programmes pursue careers in education, heritage management, law, journalism, publishing, the civil service, cultural institutions and research. Postgraduate study in classics, ancient history, archaeology, heritage management or a related field is also a natural route.
