Classics and Music is a combination that connects two of the oldest and most enduring of human cultural achievements. Classics is the study of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds, encompassing their literature, history, art, philosophy, and material culture, and it is a discipline that invites you to engage directly with texts and objects that have shaped European civilisation for over two millennia. Music, as an academic discipline, combines the analytical study of musical structures and theory with the historical and critical understanding of how music has developed and what it means in different cultural contexts.

At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme includes a year abroad and draws on the university's strengths in both fields. Classics at Glasgow encompasses the study of Latin and Greek languages at any level, meaning you can enter without prior knowledge of either and develop your engagement with ancient texts as far as your interests and abilities take you. You will also study ancient history, classical literature, and the art and material culture of Greece and Rome.

The music component develops your theoretical and analytical understanding of musical form, harmony, counterpoint, and structure, alongside historical study of musical traditions from the Renaissance through to the present. The combination allows you to trace the remarkable continuities and transformations in Western culture from antiquity to the present through two of its most persistent forms.

Graduates move into careers in education, arts administration, broadcasting, arts journalism, archiving, librarianship, and music.
