Cognitive Science

Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of the mind and its processes. It brings together philosophy, psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, computer science, and artificial intelligence to ask fundamental questions about how thinking works: how we perceive, remember, reason, learn, and use language, and whether minds can be modelled or replicated in machines. It is a field that refuses to respect the traditional boundaries between disciplines, insisting that understanding cognition requires tools and concepts from all of them.

The University of Edinburgh is one of the world's leading centres for cognitive science and artificial intelligence research, and its four-year full-time Cognitive Science programme draws on that exceptional intellectual environment. You will study the foundations of the field, including the philosophy of mind, theories of perception and attention, computational models of cognition, the structure of language, and the neuroscientific basis of mental processes. Edinburgh's strength in artificial intelligence means you will engage seriously with the question of what it would mean to build a system that thinks, and what current AI systems can and cannot tell us about natural intelligence.

The programme is demanding in its breadth and in its expectation that you engage rigorously with both empirical evidence and philosophical argument. A typical entry tariff of 232 points reflects the intellectual level at which study is conducted. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution with its own cognitive science research strengths, broadening your perspective and your network.

You will develop skills in critical reasoning, formal modelling, experimental methods, and writing across different disciplinary styles.

Graduates pursue careers in artificial intelligence research and development, user experience design, data science, academic research, clinical and educational psychology pathways, and human-computer interaction. Postgraduate study in cognitive science, AI, linguistics, or philosophy of mind is a natural continuation for those with research ambitions.
