Common Law/Italian Language
The Common Law LLB with Italian Language offers an unusual and intellectually rich pairing: a rigorous legal education grounded in the common law tradition alongside high-level proficiency in one of Europe's major languages and an engagement with its culture. Law trains you to reason precisely, to construct and evaluate arguments, and to navigate complex regulatory frameworks. Italian adds a linguistic and cultural dimension that opens doors to comparative legal study, international practice, and the rich literary and artistic tradition of the Italian-speaking world.
At Glasgow this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, which is essential for achieving genuine fluency in Italian and for experiencing the legal and cultural context of Italy directly. You will study core areas of law including contract, delict, property, and constitutional and administrative law, developing a thorough grounding in the common law tradition and the skills of legal analysis that professional and academic legal work demands. Alongside this you will develop your Italian language skills to a high level through regular language classes and literary and cultural study, examining how Italy's history, society, and artistic production connect to the wider European tradition.
The two subjects develop complementary analytical capacities, and the combination makes you a distinctive graduate.
It is important to note that the Common Law LLB is not accredited by the Law Society of Scotland and is therefore not suitable for students who wish to practise law in Scotland through the Scottish legal route. Students considering this programme should be clear about their intended professional direction before applying.
Graduates from Common Law with Italian Language go on to careers in law, international business, the diplomatic service, cultural organisations, and the European institutions. Many pursue postgraduate legal conversion or training routes in England and Wales, or move into roles where language and legal knowledge together create a distinctive profile. Postgraduate study in law, European studies, or Italian literature is also well established from this degree.
