Common Law/Spanish Language

Common Law and Spanish Language is a combination that develops two very different but complementary sets of intellectual and practical skills. The Common Law strand provides a rigorous grounding in legal analysis, theory and comparative legal systems, developing the ability to read legal texts with precision, construct well-reasoned legal arguments and understand how law functions across different jurisdictions. It is important to note that the Common Law LLB at Glasgow is not accredited by the Law Society of Scotland and is therefore not designed for students who wish to practise law in Scotland.

Spanish language study adds a second major dimension, developing linguistic fluency and cultural understanding in one of the world's most widely spoken and culturally significant languages.

This four-year full-time degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to develop your Spanish in an immersive context and to gain international perspective on both the language and the legal systems that operate in Spanish-speaking countries. You will study legal reasoning and comparative legal analysis alongside advancing your command of Spanish to a high level, developing the ability to engage with legal and cultural material in two languages. The combination cultivates intellectual range and the kind of cross-cultural competence that is genuinely rare.

Graduates from this combination are well placed for careers in international business, legal publishing, translation of legal materials, work in multilateral organisations, policy roles concerned with Spanish-speaking countries, and the wide range of roles in finance, diplomacy, media and consultancy where both legal analytical skills and Spanish language proficiency are valued. Those wishing to pursue legal practice outside Scotland may find the Common Law LLB a useful foundation alongside further professional qualifications. Further study in comparative law, Hispanic studies, international relations or translation is a natural route for graduates seeking specialist or academic careers.
