Comparative Literature and Russian and Spanish

Comparative literature, Russian, and Spanish is a combination that opens up the literary world in an unusually expansive way. Adding Russian and Spanish gives you direct linguistic access to two of the world's great literary traditions, one that has shaped European modernism and thought profoundly and another that spans Europe, Latin America, and a global community of Spanish-speaking cultures.

At St Andrews this four-year full-time degree opens up literary study in multiple directions. Through comparative literature you will read texts of any genre and any period in English translation, drawing on expertise from across the School of Modern Languages to understand the relationships between literatures around the world. Alongside this, you will develop genuine linguistic competence in Russian and Spanish, reading primary texts in both languages and engaging with their broader cultural, historical, and social contexts.
