About this course

Gain a unique skillset by using data science to tackle linguistics areas including the study of institutional language in settings like courtroom exchanges. BSc Computational Linguistics is a three-year degree, with an optional fourth year for a placement or study abroad, taught at our Colchester campus. This course combines the study of human language with the analytical power of data science.

You'll explore how language works, how people communicate, and how linguistic data can be collected, analysed, and interpreted using advanced computational and statistical techniques. An understanding of language enhances our self-awareness and helps us address fundamental questions about human communication. Linguistics is increasingly influential in fields such as psychology, philosophy, education, and artificial intelligence, with applications ranging from human rights and language learning to healthcare and legal communication.

This course provides a distinctive combination of linguistics and data science, equipping you with the skills to investigate language through large datasets, experiments, statistical analysis, and machine learning techniques. You'll learn how to use data-driven approaches to answer complex questions about language and communication.
