About this course

Computer engineering occupies the space between computer science and electronic engineering, concerned with the design and implementation of computer systems from the hardware level upward. Where computer science focuses primarily on algorithms, software, and computation as abstract processes, computer engineering asks how those processes are realised in physical systems: how processors are designed, how hardware and software interact, how networks are built and managed, and how modern diverse and distributed computing architectures are constructed to be reliable, efficient, and secure.

At the University of Southampton, this four-year full-time Computer Engineering degree with a foundation year provides an in-depth education in how to design and build computer systems. The foundation year is a supported entry route, giving students who need additional preparation in mathematics or related subjects the grounding required to progress onto the three-year engineering degree that follows. Across the programme you will develop knowledge in hardware design, digital systems, computer architecture, operating systems, networks, embedded computing, and the mathematical principles that underpin all of these areas.
